Swim Lesson Levels

Parent & Child

Ages: 6 months – 2 years old
Child, parent and instructor work together to help children adjust to the water. This program includes basic safety practices to help parents keep children safe in and around water. An adult must accompany child in the water.

Tiny Tots (formerly Preschool Level 1)

Ages: 3 years old
This program is for 3 year olds. Your preschooler will explore the water through games and toys while learning how to be a part of a group and understand water safety rules. There will be one instructor per three students in this program.

 

Tad Poles (formerly Preschool Level 2 & 3)

Ages: 4-5 years old
This program is designed for children 4 and 5 years old to feel comfortable and enjoy water safely through group instruction and games. Beginner swimming skills are introduced. Children explore using arm and leg actions in preparation for performing strokes. There will be one instructor per six students in this program.

 

Level 1

Ages: 6 years old
This program is designed for 6 year olds. Participants work on breath holding and floating then progress towards swimming five feet on front and back with support from an instructor. There will be one instructor per six students in this program.

 

Level 2

Ages: 6 years old and up, based upon ability
Participants must have passed Level 1 or demonstrate skills required in Level 1. Participants learn to float on front and back without support. They practice front stroke with rotary breathing, back stroke, complete front and back glides, and begin to tread water. This level marks the beginning of true independent swimming skills.

 

Level 3

Ages: 6 years old and up, based upon ability
Participants must have passed Level 2 or be able to demonstrate skill requirements for Level 2 (including front stroke with rotary breathing). Skills covered in Level 3 are rotary breathing, treading water for one minute, front crawl, dolphin kick, flutter kick, breaststroke kick, side stroke kick, and elementary backstroke.

 

Level 4

Ages: 6 years old and up, based upon ability
Participants must have passed Level 3 or be able to demonstrate all the skills required for Level 3. All six strokes are covered in Level 4: front crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, back crawl, and sidestroke. Additional skills covered are open turns on front and back, beginning fundamentals of diving, and treading water for two minutes.
