Ask a Trainer: Finding a Routine that Fits Your Life

Feb 28, 2025 | Health & Wellness Inspiration, Homepage

Embarking on a fitness journey can feel overwhelming at first, and you may not know where to start. That’s why we’re excited to introduce “Ask a Trainer”, a new interview-style series featuring expert insights from Old Town Hot Springs fitness trainers. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for some new motivation, our trainers are here to help inspire and guide you!

To kick off the series, Marisa Howard, the OTHS Fitness Manager talks about Finding a Routine that Fits Your Life. Establishing a workout routine is one thing, sticking with it is another. Marisa shares practical tips to help you build a sustainable routine that works for you.

How often should I work out?

Many gym-goers wonder how many days per week they should exercise. The answer depends on their goals, fitness level, and recovery needs. Generally, NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, which can be broken down into 3-5 days of training, and into short, effective workouts during the day.

My schedule is packed-how can I realistically fit 150 minutes of exercise into my week?

To fit exercise into your daily routine, start by identifying small windows of time—whether it’s a 20-minute morning workout, a lunchtime walk, or an evening strength session. Incorporate movement into everyday activities, like taking the stairs, doing bodyweight exercises while watching TV, or stretching during breaks. Consistency matters more than intensity, so aim for a routine you can sustain rather than an all-or-nothing approach. Incorporate a balance of strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and mobility work, following proper recovery and progression strategies. Remember, fitness should enhance your life, not overwhelm it—so find a balance that keeps you feeling strong, energized, and motivated!
